This painting titled "Geisha Doll" is an oil painting on 16" X 20" canvas. The painting depicts a young woman wearing a traditional geisha outfit. A significant amount of research went into this painting prior to its creation. The colorful kimono or gofuku has a significant symbolism. The bright red color of the outfit indicates that this kimono is worn by an unmarried young woman. I also wanted to segment the painting into the four basic elements, earth (signified by the trees and rocks to the mid right section), water (on the mid left section), fire (indicated by the red of the kimono), and air (signified by the clouds). The crane upon her dress has significant symbolism as well. Cranes were the customary steeds of the Immortals and their eggs were used to prepare drugs to confer immortality. The
annual return of the crane was a symbol of regeneration. The Japanese believed that cranes (zuru) lived for thousands of years.
