Effeuiller la marguerite

This is an oil painting of a young woman seated beside a stream deep in thought as she holds a daisy. The idea is that the girl is contemplating some love, most likely someone who does not love her back or is unaware of her affection. As she sits alone by the stream, she plucks the pedals saying "He loves me, he loves me not."

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not or effeuiller la marguerite is a game of French origin in which a person pulls one pedal from a flower repeating the phrase "He (or she) loves me" alternating with "He (or she) loves me not". The object of the game is to determine whether or not the person one feels affection towards also has affection in return for the player of the game. This is most often performed using the flower known as the ox-eye daisy or Leucanthemum vulgare. It is also sometimes called moon daisy or dog daisy.

The flower has come to symbolize both patience and by way of this game, love and unrequited love. It is also a wild flower, and therefore can represent the wild nature of love. The full expression of "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not..." in French is: Il / elle m'aime un peu, beaucoup, passionnément, à la folie, pas du tout (He/she loves me a little, a lot, passionately, madly, not at all).

The little stream and landscape for this painting was based upon a small stream I would frequently visit for moments of quiet contemplation.

This is one of currently (2010) just two large oil paintings that I have done. Most of my works are small as I am in a wheelchair and it is very difficult to work with large canvases. To do this painting, for some portions I had to tape my brush to a dowel stick to reach sections to paint.
